Meet The Coach

Who is Matt Conrad  and why should you train with him?

Matt is a former 4 year collegiate Angelo State University basketball player that played for hall of fame Coach Ed Messbarger.  When Matt’s collegiate playing career ended, he was third all time in assists at Angelo State.  Matt’s senior year of High School he received votes and finished in the top 25 of all players in the state for Mr. Basketball Illinois, an award given to the top high school player in the entire state.

He had the opportunity through his basketball playing days to play for and attend camps from some of the best high school and collegiate coaches in the country.  This list includes:

  •  Attending basketball camps run by hall of fame collegiate coaches and two of the three all time winningest collegiate men’s coaches, Bobby Knight and Mike Krzyzewski (Coach K).
  • Attending camps run by Gene Pingnatore, head basketball coach of St Joseph’s high school, which has produced numerous NBA players.  Coach Pingnatore has won over 1,000 high school basketball games.
  • Played for Bill Geist, at Benet Academy.  Coach Geist teams have an Illinois state record of 102 straight home wins.
  • Played for Tom Allen, at Benet Academy, who went on to open Tom Allen Basketball Academy in Illinois that produced numerous collegiate basketball players.
  • His father, Jim Conrad, who played collegiate basketball at Illinois State University also was a big impact on Matt and his knowledge of the game.

Matt’s attention to detail and knowledge of the game of basketball caught the eye of former ASU women’s coach Cayla Petree, which led Coach Petree to offering Matt a position on her staff at ASU.  His coaching/teaching background also includes coaching youths in YMCA and San Angelo Rec basketball, along with having taught children and adults in Tae Kwon Do.

In addition to having been a successful player and coach, Matt has also been involved in the game as a referee.  This knowledge and experience allows him to also teach on not only what are the finer points to become a better player, but also towards what the officials of the game are doing.

With the creation of San Angelo Basketball Training Academy, it is Matt’s goal to help develop and grow the game of basketball in and around San Angelo.  Working with young children that want to learn the game, to helping junior high and high school players improve their skills so they can play successfully at a higher level.  He will work closely with each student on his or her specific needs.  Including in this will be drills they can practice outside of training that will enhance their skills at a faster rate.  Matt is very skilled at knowing what players abilities are and what they can accomplish with work and dedication to improving their game.  He is extremely passionate about the game and ready to help his clients improve theirs.  You will be given individual guidance to exceed your potential.
